Hackney Area Guide

Hackney has a little something for everyone, and property prices here tend to be more affordable than those in neighbouring Islington and Stoke Newington. In the heart of the area, the area has hugely improved since the Olympics. There are plenty new builds, ex-councils, warehouse conversions and Victorian terraces, as well as more spacious Georgian villas. Many multi occupation Georgian and Victorian homes have been restored to single homes as the area grows in popularity.

Hackney Central is the fashion hub, with outlets from Nike to Burberry, and exciting plans for expansion. London Fields has coffee shops, restaurants, Broadway Market and the London Fields Lido, an Olympic-sized pool that’s open all year round. Victoria Park has streets of Victorian homes, plus cafes and pubs. The park itself is popular with families, for its playgrounds, wildlife areas and model boating lake.

Schools

Hackney has a wide choice of schools rated ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted, including London Fields Primary and Mossbourne Community Academy. The area is served by Overground train services into Stratford and Liverpool Street.

Transport

Overground:It is only 20 minutes from Hackney Central to Oxford Street via the Victoria Line at Highbury and Islington, 17 minutes to Shoreditch and 27 minutes to Canary Wharf. There are also stations at Homerton, Hackney Wick, Dalston Kingsland and Dalston Junction.
Train:Hackney Downs is on the East Anglia Line, and this route will get you to Liverpool Street in eight minutes.
Bike:More people cycle to work here than any other place in the Capital, pleasant cycle routes via the canal and parks.
Bus:Left over from the days when trains were scarce, Hackney is well served by bus. The 55, 38, 30, 242 and 48 all go towards the City and central London.
Getting away:City Airport is 35 minutes away via the Overground, while Stansted is 35 minutes away by car.
