Highgate Area Guide
Highgate is a suburban area of north London at the north-eastern corner of Hampstead Heath. Highgate is a leafy residential area featuring quaint tearooms, gastro pubs and fine 18th-century buildings. Brimming with beautiful 18th century architecture and green spaces, Highgate maintains the aura of an exclusive village perched on top of a steep hill.
With its elegant Georgian buildings, its pretty high street, its village green and views across London, Highgate still has the feel of an 18th century village. It even holds a village fair every year in June. Close to central London and on the Northern Line, Highgate is an area that inspires loyalty.
Schools As a meeting point of the three boroughs of Camden, Haringey and Islington, parents have an extensive choice of schools. Several of the local state primaries have been judged ‘outstanding’ by government watchdog Ofsted. These include St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School and St Michael’s School.
At secondary level, Ofsted deems the closest state schools –Mount Carmel for girls and St Aloysius College for boys – ‘good’. Many people also relocate to the area for the top-performing private schools. Catering for pupils aged 3 to 18, these include Highgate School and Channing School.
Highgate is also home to St Giles International School, with its impressive Edwardian building and picturesque garden. It’s renowned for its high academic results, with courses for students of all nationalities.
TransportOnly 5 miles from Central London Highgate Underground Station means that travelling to the centre or the city is fast and easy – a journey to Leicester Square takes just 17 minutes, while Bank is a 21minute ride away.
Highgate tube station is the Northern Line; although residents of the village often prefer to catch one of the numerous buses – 143,210 and 271, down Highgate Hill to Archway, also on the Northern Line. In Zone 3 an annual travel card will cost around £1,600.
